Jesus responds to a tragedy in the news with a warning that catches everyone off guard. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Luke 13.
Told about Galileans killed by Pilate, Jesus insists they were no worse sinners than anyone else, and warns, “except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish,” repeating the same warning regarding eighteen people killed when a tower fell in Siloam. He tells the parable of a barren fig tree given one more year to produce fruit before being cut down, a picture of patient but limited mercy.
Teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath, Jesus heals a woman who had been bent over for eighteen years, and when the ruler of the synagogue objects to healing on the Sabbath, Jesus points out that they would readily untie an ox or donkey to give it water on that same day. He compares the kingdom of God to a mustard seed growing into a great tree, and to leaven working through an entire batch of dough, small beginnings producing far-reaching results.
Asked whether only a few will be saved, Jesus urges His listeners to “strive to enter in at the strait gate,” warning that many will seek to enter and fail, and that people will come from east and west, north and south, to sit in the kingdom of God, while some who assumed they belonged will be shut out entirely. Warned that Herod wants to kill Him, Jesus presses on toward Jerusalem regardless, and laments over the city that kills its prophets, longing to gather its people “as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings,” though they were unwilling.
Jesus refused to treat tragedy as proof of someone else’s greater guilt, and instead used it as an urgent call to everyone listening. His warning, repent or likewise perish, was never about ranking sinners against each other. It was a call for honest self-examination rather than comfortable judgment of others.
