God commands that the land itself observe a Sabbath rest every seventh year, left completely unplanted and unharvested, trusting God to provide, while whatever grows naturally may be eaten by everyone, including servants, strangers, and even the cattle and wild animals. After seven cycles of these Sabbath years, forty-nine years total, the fiftieth year becomes the Year of Jubilee, announced with a trumpet blast on the Day of Atonement. The Hebrew word for this trumpet and the year itself is “yobel,” originally referring to a ram’s horn.
In this Jubilee year, God commands that liberty be proclaimed “throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” Property that had been sold reverts back to its original family, and Israelite servants who had sold themselves into servitude due to poverty are set free to return to their own families and land. Prices for land and labor are to be calculated fairly based on how many years remain until the next Jubilee, ensuring that no one is permanently exploited or dispossessed.
God repeatedly emphasizes compassion for the poor throughout this chapter, forbidding usury or excessive interest when lending to a struggling Israelite, and commanding that Israelite servants be treated as hired workers rather than permanent slaves, since “they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.” Every fifty years, regardless of how much debt or poverty had accumulated, Israel’s entire economic system reset, giving every family a genuine fresh start.
The Year of Jubilee prevented poverty and inequality from becoming permanent, generational conditions locked in forever. Built directly into Israel’s calendar was a guaranteed reset, land restored, debts settled, freedom granted. God’s concern for economic justice wasn’t an occasional afterthought. It was structured into the very rhythm of the nation’s life.
