The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Cut off” it comes from the Hebrew Word “karath” which means “to cut off, to be excluded.”
God attaches real, severe penalties to the violations described in the previous chapters. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Leviticus 20.
God commands that anyone, Israelite or stranger, who gives their child to Molech must be put to death by stoning, warning that if the community fails to execute this judgment, God Himself will set His face against that family and cut them off. Similarly, anyone who turns to mediums or wizards to be “defiled” by them faces God’s direct judgment. God repeats the command to be holy, since He is the Lord who sanctifies His people, setting them apart from other nations specifically to belong to Him.
The chapter then lists severe consequences, mostly death, for cursing one’s parents, and for many of the sexual sins described in Leviticus 18, adultery, relations with a stepmother or daughter-in-law, and various other prohibited relationships, using the Hebrew word “karath,” meaning to be cut off, for many of these violations, describing their exclusion from the covenant community and its blessings.
God reminds Israel again why these boundaries matter so much, warning that if they follow the corrupt customs of the nations He is driving out before them, the land itself will vomit them out just as it did those nations. God closes by reaffirming Israel’s unique, set-apart identity. “Ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.”
The severity of these penalties can be jarring to read, but they reflect just how seriously God treated the boundaries meant to protect Israel’s family structure, worship, and identity as His set-apart people. These weren’t minor cultural preferences. They were treated as matters of life, death, and national survival in the land God had given them.
