God instructs Israel not to follow the practices of Egypt, where they had dwelt, nor the practices of Canaan, where they are going, but instead to follow God’s own judgments and statutes, “which if a man do, he shall live in them.” God then lists specific prohibited relationships, forbidding sexual relations with close relatives, a father or mother, a stepmother, a sister, a granddaughter, an aunt, a sister-in-law, or a neighbor’s wife, establishing clear boundaries meant to protect family structure and human dignity.
God specifically forbids child sacrifice to Molech, a practice associated with the surrounding nations, along with other sexual practices considered “abomination,” “tow’ebah” in Hebrew, meaning something detestable or offensive to God. These prohibitions are given not as arbitrary restrictions, but as protections against the very practices that had defiled the land before Israel’s arrival.
God warns solemnly that the land itself was defiled by these practices among the nations that lived there previously, and that the land eventually “vomiteth out her inhabitants” because of such defilement. Israel is warned that if they commit these same abominations, the land will vomit them out just as it did the nations before them, since “whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people.” Obedience to these boundaries is treated as directly tied to Israel’s ongoing security in the land God is giving them.
God’s warning that the land itself rejected the nations who defiled it through these practices is a sobering reminder that holiness was never just a personal, private matter for Israel. Their collective faithfulness or unfaithfulness had real, lasting consequences for the entire community’s future in the land God had promised them.
