LEVITICUS 12 ‐ “Purification After Childbirth”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Purify” it comes from the Hebrew Word “taher” which means “to purify, to cleanse.”

God addresses the process a new mother goes through after welcoming a child into the world. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Leviticus 12.

God gives Moses instructions regarding a woman after childbirth. If she bears a male child, she remains ceremonially unclean for seven days, and on the eighth day the child is circumcised, exactly as God had commanded Abraham generations earlier. She continues in a period of purification, “taher” in Hebrew meaning to purify or cleanse, for an additional thirty-three days, avoiding contact with holy things or the sanctuary until this time is fully completed.

If she bears a female child, the period of uncleanness and purification is doubled, two weeks of initial uncleanness followed by sixty-six days of continued purification. When her days of purifying are completed, she is to bring a lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or turtledove for a sin offering to the priest at the tabernacle door, and the priest makes atonement for her, so that she is cleansed.

God graciously provides for those unable to afford a lamb, allowing two turtledoves or two young pigeons instead, one for a burnt offering and one for a sin offering, following the same gracious pattern of accommodation seen elsewhere in Leviticus for those with limited means. This detail matters, since it shows that even this deeply personal, physically demanding season of a woman’s life was still met with God’s provision, regardless of her family’s financial situation.

Even in something as intimate and physically demanding as childbirth, God provided a clear path back into full participation in worship, with real accommodation for families who could not afford the standard offering. God’s holiness never excluded the ordinary, difficult seasons of life. It made room for them, with mercy built directly into the process.
