Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each take their censers, put fire in them, and offer “strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.” The Hebrew phrase for this unauthorized fire is “esh zarah.” Immediately, “fire went out from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.” Moses tells Aaron that this tragedy fulfills what God had said, that He will be sanctified in those who come near Him and glorified before all the people. Aaron, remarkably, “held his peace.”
Moses instructs Aaron’s cousins to carry the bodies outside the camp, and forbids Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, from mourning openly or leaving the tabernacle, lest they die as well and bring wrath on the whole congregation, since the anointing oil of the Lord is upon them. God then speaks directly to Aaron, commanding that neither he nor his sons drink wine or strong drink when entering the tabernacle, “lest ye die,” so that they can properly distinguish between holy and unholy, clean and unclean, and teach Israel all the statutes God has spoken through Moses.
A dispute follows over whether Aaron’s sons correctly handled a portion of the sin offering that day, given the tragic circumstances weighing on them, and Moses, upon hearing Aaron’s explanation, is satisfied with his reasoning, showing some flexibility of application even amid otherwise strict requirements.
Nadab and Abihu’s failure wasn’t a small technicality. They approached God’s presence carelessly, on their own terms rather than His, immediately after witnessing God’s fire fall in acceptance just one chapter earlier. Approaching a holy God still requires genuine reverence, not casual assumption, however familiar that presence may start to feel.
