Jeremiah prays, “Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach. Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens,” describing how they are orphans and fatherless, their mothers are as widows, they have drunk their water for money, their “wood,” “ets” in Hebrew, is sold to them, their necks are under persecution, they labor, and have no rest.
Jeremiah describes how they have given their hand to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread, their fathers have sinned, and are not, and they have borne their iniquities, servants have ruled over them, there is none who delivers them out of their hand, they get their bread with the peril of their lives because of the sword of the wilderness, their skin is black like an oven because of the terrible famine, describing how the joy of their heart has ceased, their dance is turned into mourning, the crown has fallen from their head, woe to them, for they have sinned.
Jeremiah closes with a heartfelt, honest prayer, acknowledging that for this their heart is faint, for these things their eyes are dim, because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it, yet declaring, “Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation,” asking why the Lord would forget them forever, and forsake them for so long a time, pleading, “Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.
