After Ehud’s death, Israel again does evil, and God sells them into the hand of Jabin, king of Canaan, whose military commander Sisera oppresses Israel harshly for twenty years with nine hundred iron chariots. Deborah, a prophetess, judges Israel at this time, and people come to her for judgment under a palm tree. She summons Barak, instructing him with God’s command to gather ten thousand men and confront Sisera’s army at Mount Tabor, promising that God will deliver Sisera into his hand.
Barak agrees to go only if Deborah goes with him, and she agrees, though she tells him plainly that because of this hesitation, the honor of defeating Sisera will go to a woman instead of to him. God routs Sisera’s entire army before Israel, and Sisera flees on foot, taking refuge in the tent of Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite, since peace existed between their households. Jael welcomes him warmly, covers him with a mantle, and gives him milk to drink when he asks for water, allowing him to fall asleep exhausted.
While Sisera sleeps, Jael takes a tent peg and a hammer, and drives the peg through his temple into the ground, killing him instantly. When Barak arrives pursuing Sisera, Jael shows him the dead commander, fulfilling Deborah’s earlier prophecy exactly. God subdues Jabin, king of Canaan, before Israel that day, and the hand of Israel prospers increasingly against him until he is finally destroyed.
Two women, Deborah leading with prophetic authority and Jael acting with sudden decisive courage, accomplish what Barak’s hesitation nearly forfeited. This account challenges any assumption about who God can use for real deliverance, since neither of these women fit the expected role of a military leader in their culture.
