Jephthah, a mighty man of valor but the son of a harlot, is driven away by his own half-brothers and denied any inheritance, forcing him to live in the land of Tob, where a group of outcasts gathers around him. When the Ammonites threaten war, the elders of Gilead, desperate for capable leadership, seek Jephthah out and ask him to become their commander, and he agrees on the condition that he will remain their head even after the crisis passes, a promise they confirm before the Lord at Mizpeh.
Jephthah first attempts a diplomatic approach, sending messengers to the king of Ammon explaining Israel’s legitimate historical claim to the disputed land, but the king refuses to listen. As the Spirit of the Lord comes upon Jephthah and he prepares for battle, he makes a rash and tragic vow, “neder” in Hebrew, promising that whatever comes out of his house first to meet him upon his victorious return will be offered up as a burnt offering to the Lord.
God delivers a decisive victory over the Ammonites into Jephthah’s hand, but upon his return home, his own daughter, his only child, comes out first to meet him with timbrels and dancing. Devastated, Jephthah tears his clothes, but his daughter, remarkably composed, urges him to fulfill his vow to the Lord since he has already spoken it, only asking for two months first to mourn her virginity in the mountains with her companions. The text describes this tragic outcome becoming a custom among Israel’s daughters, who mourn Jephthah’s daughter four days every year afterward.
Jephthah’s rash, tragic vow illustrates a serious danger woven throughout the book of Judges, that spiritual zeal disconnected from careful thought about God’s actual character can lead to devastating consequences. His daughter’s remarkable composure in the face of such tragedy stands as one of the most quietly heartbreaking moments in the entire Old Testament.
