With Jericho tightly shut up because of the Israelites, God gives Joshua an unusual battle plan. Israel’s armed men are to march around the city once daily for six days, with seven priests carrying trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day, they are to march around the city seven times, and when the priests sound a long trumpet blast, “teruah” in Hebrew, all the people are to shout with a great shout, and the city’s wall will fall down flat.
Israel follows these instructions exactly, marching silently around the city each day as commanded, with only the trumpets sounding. On the seventh day, they march around Jericho seven times, and when the priests blow the trumpets, Joshua commands the people to shout, “for the LORD hath given you the city.” The wall falls down flat exactly as promised, and the people charge straight into the city and take it.
As instructed, Israel completely destroys the city and everything in it, though they spare Rahab and her family exactly as the spies had promised, since she hid the messengers Israel had sent. All the silver, gold, and vessels of brass and iron are dedicated to the treasury of the Lord’s house rather than taken as personal plunder. Joshua pronounces a curse on anyone who rebuilds Jericho, and his fame spreads throughout the entire land as it becomes clear that the Lord is with him.
God’s strategy for Jericho required no military skill at all, just obedient marching, patient waiting, and a shout at exactly the right moment. Some victories, this account shows, come not through strength or cleverness, but simply through following God’s instructions exactly as given, however unconventional they might seem.
