Two and a half tribes head home across the Jordan, and build something that nearly starts a civil war. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Joshua 22.
Joshua calls together the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh, commending them for faithfully keeping their promise to fight alongside their brothers throughout the entire conquest, and sends them home to their own land east of the Jordan with his blessing and a great deal of livestock, silver, gold, and valuable spoil to share with those who remained behind.
On their way home, these tribes build a large, conspicuous altar near the Jordan, and when the rest of Israel hears of it, they assume the worst, that these eastern tribes have turned away from following the Lord and built a rival altar for idolatrous worship, and the whole congregation gathers at Shiloh ready to go to war against them. Before attacking, they first send Phinehas the priest and ten leaders to confront the eastern tribes directly, recalling how devastating past sin, like the incident at Peor, had been for the entire nation.
Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh explain that this altar was never meant for burnt offerings or sacrifices at all, but as a witness, “ed” in Hebrew, a physical reminder for future generations that they too belong fully to Israel and worship the same Lord, despite living across the Jordan, fearing that their descendants might one day be told they have no share in the Lord. Satisfied with this explanation, Phinehas and the leaders are greatly relieved, and the crisis is resolved peacefully, with the eastern tribes naming the altar “Ed,” meaning witness, “for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.”
A serious misunderstanding nearly led to civil war between fellow Israelites, resolved only because both sides took the time to communicate honestly rather than acting immediately on assumption. This account is a valuable reminder that even sincere concern for God’s honor can lead to real conflict when it skips the simple step of asking clarifying questions first.
