The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Describe” it comes from the Hebrew Word “kathab” which means “to write, to describe.”
Seven tribes still haven’t received their portion, so Joshua sends out survey teams to map what’s left. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Joshua 18.
The whole congregation of Israel gathers together at Shiloh and sets up the tabernacle of the congregation there, since the land is now largely subdued before them. Joshua notices that seven tribes still have not received their inheritance, and challenges them directly. “How long are ye slack to go to possess the land, which the LORD God of your fathers hath given you?”
Joshua instructs each of these seven tribes to choose three men to walk through the remaining land and describe it in writing, “kathab” in Hebrew, dividing it into seven portions, which they then bring back to him at Shiloh. Joshua casts lots for them there before the Lord, dividing this surveyed land fairly among the remaining tribes according to their divisions.
The tribe of Benjamin receives its inheritance first among these remaining seven, positioned strategically between Judah to the south and the descendants of Joseph to the north, with its border described in careful detail, including the city of Jerusalem, referred to here as Jebusi, along with a lengthy list of cities within its territory. This methodical, organized approach to dividing what remained ensured that even the tribes who had not yet stepped forward with a specific request, like Caleb or Zelophehad’s daughters had, still received their full, fair inheritance in the land.
Joshua’s challenge, how long will you delay taking hold of what God has already given you, applies well beyond ancient land division. Sometimes God’s promises are genuinely already ours, yet still require deliberate, intentional action to actually walk into and possess, rather than simply waiting passively for them to arrive on their own.
