The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Inheritance” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nachalah” which means “inheritance, possession.”
At eighty-five years old, one of the original twelve spies asks for the hardest piece of land still left to conquer. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Joshua 14.
Eleazar the priest, Joshua, and the heads of Israel’s tribal families oversee the division of the land west of the Jordan among the remaining nine and a half tribes, determined by casting lots, exactly as God commanded through Moses. Before this process fully unfolds, the children of Judah come to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb steps forward with a striking personal request.
Caleb reminds Joshua of what happened forty-five years earlier at Kadeshbarnea, when Moses sent him and the other spies to search out the land, and how, unlike the other ten spies, Caleb “wholly followed the LORD my God.” He recalls Moses’ promise that the land his feet had walked on that day would become his and his children’s inheritance forever, because he followed the Lord fully.
Now eighty-five years old, Caleb declares remarkably that he remains “as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me,” ready for war just as he was decades earlier, and asks specifically for the very mountain the giant Anakims still occupy, trusting that if the Lord is with him, he will be able to drive them out exactly as the Lord said. Joshua blesses Caleb and gives him Hebron as his inheritance, “because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel,” and the land finally rests from war.
Caleb didn’t ask for the easiest, safest portion of land available to him. At eighty-five years old, he specifically requested the mountain still occupied by giants, trusting the same God who had proven faithful decades earlier. A lifetime of wholeheartedly following the Lord left Caleb still eager for a real challenge, not simply a comfortable retirement.
