This chapter provides a careful, summarizing list of every king, “melek” in Hebrew, defeated by Israel throughout their conquest of the land. It begins by recounting the victories already won under Moses east of the Jordan, Sihon, king of the Amorites, and Og, king of Bashan, whose territories were given to Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh.
The chapter then transitions to the kings Joshua and Israel defeated west of the Jordan, listing city after city and king after king in careful, methodical order, from Jericho and Ai through the southern campaign’s many conquered cities, and on through the decisive northern campaign against Jabin of Hazor and his allies.
