The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Strong and courageous” it comes from the Hebrew Word “chazaq amats” which means “be strong and courageous.”

After Moses’ death, God speaks directly to Joshua, instructing him to arise and cross the Jordan with all the people, into the land God is giving them. God promises that every place the sole of their foot treads has already been given to them, exactly as He promised Moses, and repeats a phrase that will echo through the whole book. “Be strong and of a good courage.” The Hebrew phrase “chazaq amats” carries both physical resolve and inner steadiness.
God ties this courage directly to obedience, instructing Joshua to be careful to observe all the law Moses commanded, not turning from it to the right or the left, so that he may prosper wherever he goes. God promises, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night,” and repeats His command a third time, “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Joshua instructs the officers to prepare the people to cross the Jordan within three days, and reminds Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh of their earlier promise to Moses to send armed men ahead of their brothers until the land is fully conquered. These tribes respond with full support, promising to obey Joshua exactly as they obeyed Moses, and echoing back to him the very words God had spoken. “Only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses… be strong and of a good courage.”
God’s repeated command to Joshua, be strong and of good courage, wasn’t about natural bravery. It was tied directly to God’s own promised presence and to careful obedience to His word. Real courage, this opening chapter shows, grows out of knowing exactly who is going with you, not out of confidence in your own strength alone.
