Jonah prays to the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly, declaring, “I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice,” describing how He had cast him into the deep, in the midst of the seas, and the “floods,” “nahar” in Hebrew, compassed him about, all His billows and His waves passing over him.
Jonah describes then saying he is cast out of God’s sight, yet he will look again toward His holy temple, the waters compassing him about, even to the soul, the depth closing him round about, the weeds being wrapped about his head, he going down to the bottoms of the mountains, the earth with her bars being about him forever, yet God has brought up his life from corruption, describing how when his soul fainted within him, he remembered the Lord, and his prayer came in to Him, into His holy temple.
Jonah observes that those who observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy, but he will sacrifice to Him with the voice of thanksgiving, and will pay what he has vowed, declaring, “Salvation is of the LORD,” the Lord then speaking to the fish, and it vomits out Jonah upon the dry land, this remarkable prayer of desperate, genuine repentance offered from within the very depths of consequence for his own disobedience, precisely the kind of honest turning that leads to genuine deliverance.
Jonah’s desperate prayer, offered from literally the lowest possible circumstance imaginable, demonstrates that genuine repentance and calling upon God remains available even from the very depths of self-inflicted consequence and apparent hopelessness. His declaration, salvation is of the Lord, captures this brief prayer’s essential theological insight, that genuine deliverance ultimately depends entirely on God’s own gracious initiative rather than human effort or merit.
