A great multitude follows Jesus because of the miracles He performs on the sick, and when a huge crowd gathers on a mountainside, Jesus takes a boy’s five barley loaves and two small fish, gives thanks, and distributes enough to feed about five thousand men, with twelve baskets of fragments left over. Recognizing this as a sign of the promised prophet, the people intend to make Him king by force, so Jesus withdraws alone to a mountain. That night, He walks to His disciples across the sea during a storm, saying, “It is I; be not afraid,” and immediately their boat reaches the shore.
The crowd finds Jesus again, and He challenges them not to labor for perishable food but for “that meat which endureth unto everlasting life.” When they ask for a sign like the manna Moses gave, Jesus declares plainly, “I am the bread of life,” “artos zoes” in Greek, “he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” He explains that He came down from heaven to do His Father’s will, and that everyone the Father gives Him will come to Him, and He will lose none of them, raising them up at the last day.
Jesus’ teaching that people must eat His flesh and drink His blood to have eternal life within them shocks and offends many, and He explains this is spiritual language, “the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” Many of His disciples, unable to accept this hard saying, “walked no more with him.” Jesus asks the twelve if they too will leave, and Peter answers, “Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.”
A crowd eager to crown Jesus king after being fed abandoned Him almost entirely once His teaching became genuinely difficult to accept. Peter’s response stands out sharply against that crowd, staying not because everything made sense, but because he recognized there was simply nowhere else worth going.
