At a wedding in Cana of Galilee, Jesus, His mother, and His disciples are invited guests when the wine runs out, a serious social embarrassment for the host family. Mary tells Jesus simply, “They have no wine,” and though Jesus responds that His hour has not yet come, He instructs the servants to fill six large stone waterpots with water, then to draw some out and take it to the governor of the feast. The water has become wine, and the governor, unaware of what happened, remarks that the host has saved the best wine for last. John calls this “the beginning of miracles,” “semeion” in Greek, meaning a sign, a miracle pointing toward something greater than itself, and it manifests Jesus’ glory, causing His disciples to believe on Him.
Jesus travels to Capernaum briefly with His family and disciples, then goes up to Jerusalem for the Passover. In the temple, He finds money changers and animal sellers conducting business, and, making a whip of small cords, drives them all out, overturning tables and declaring, “Make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.” His disciples remember the words of a psalm, “The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.”
When the Jews demand a sign proving His authority to act this way, Jesus responds cryptically, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,” a statement they misunderstand as referring to the physical building, but which John explains was actually about His own body, a prophecy His disciples would only fully understand after His resurrection. During the feast, many believe on Jesus because of the signs He performs, but Jesus does not fully entrust Himself to them, since He knows what is truly in every person’s heart.
Jesus’ first miracle happened at an ordinary wedding celebration, not in front of religious leaders or a grand audience, simply to save a family from embarrassment. Even His most extraordinary power showed up first in a remarkably ordinary, personal, and generous moment.
