Pilate has Jesus scourged, and soldiers mock Him with a crown of thorns and a purple robe, striking Him repeatedly. Pilate presents Jesus to the crowd, declaring, “Behold the man!” but the chief priests and officers cry out for crucifixion. When Pilate points out he finds no fault in Him, the Jews respond that by their law He ought to die for making Himself the Son of God, which only increases Pilate’s fear. Pressured by the crowd’s threat to report him to Caesar if he releases someone claiming to be a king, Pilate finally delivers Jesus to be crucified.
Jesus carries His own cross to Golgotha, where He is crucified between two others, with Pilate’s inscription above Him reading “JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS” in three languages. Soldiers divide His garments but cast lots for His seamless coat, fulfilling Scripture. From the cross, Jesus entrusts His mother’s care to “the disciple whom he loved,” likely John himself. Knowing that all things are now accomplished, Jesus says, “I thirst,” fulfilling another Scripture, and after receiving vinegar, declares, “It is finished,” the Greek word “teleo” meaning to complete or accomplish fully, and bows His head, giving up His spirit.
Since it is the day before the Sabbath, soldiers break the legs of the two criminals to hasten death, but finding Jesus already dead, one instead pierces His side with a spear, from which blood and water flow, fulfilling prophecy that not a bone of Him would be broken and that they would look on Him whom they pierced. Joseph of Arimathaea, a secret disciple, along with Nicodemus, who once came to Jesus by night, take His body, wrap it with a large quantity of myrrh and aloes, and lay it in a new, nearby tomb, since the Sabbath was drawing near.
Jesus’ final words, it is finished, were not a cry of defeat but a declaration of complete accomplishment. Every prophecy, every requirement, every piece of the plan laid out from before creation had reached its fulfillment exactly as intended. Nothing about the cross caught God by surprise or fell short of its purpose.
