The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Abide” it comes from the Greek Word “meno” which means “to abide, to remain.”
Jesus gives His disciples one final, vivid picture to describe exactly how their relationship with Him is meant to work. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is John 15.
Jesus declares, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman,” explaining that every branch that fails to bear fruit is removed, while every fruitful branch is pruned to bear even more. He commands His disciples directly, “Abide in me, and I in you.” The Greek word for abide is “meno,” meaning to remain or stay connected. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit apart from the vine, Jesus explains, “without me ye can do nothing,” while abiding in Him and having His words abide in them positions them to ask whatever they will and see it done.
Jesus repeats His command to love one another as He has loved them, describing the greatest possible expression of love. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” He tells them He no longer calls them servants but friends, since He has shared with them everything He has heard from His Father, and reminds them that He chose them, not the other way around, appointing them to go and bear fruit that remains.
Jesus warns them plainly that the world will hate them just as it hated Him first, since they do not belong to the world any more than He does. He explains that this hatred fulfills what was written, that they hated Him without a cause, but promises that the Comforter, the Spirit of truth proceeding from the Father, will testify of Him, and that His disciples also will bear witness, since they have been with Him from the beginning.
The image of abiding in the vine captures something essential about spiritual fruitfulness. It was never about disciples straining to produce good works through their own effort. It was about staying genuinely connected to Jesus, trusting that real fruit naturally flows out of that ongoing, dependent relationship.
