The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Heritage” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nachalah” which means “heritage, inheritance.”
Joel closes with a vision of final judgment and abundant blessing for God’s restored people. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Joel 3.
Joel describes how in those days, and in that time, when He shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, He will also gather all nations, and bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for His people and for His “heritage,” “nachalah” in Hebrew, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted His land.
Joel urges the nations to prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near, urging them to beat their plowshares into swords, and their pruninghooks into spears, letting the weak say, “I am strong,” urging all the heathen to be gathered round about, and to come down there, for there He will sit to judge all the heathen round about, since the harvest is ripe, urging them to come, tread, for the winepress is full, the vats overflowing, for their wickedness is great.
Joel describes multitudes in the valley of decision, for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision, the sun and moon being darkened, and the stars withdrawing their shining, the Lord also roaring out of Zion, and uttering His voice from Jerusalem, but the Lord being the hope of His people, and the strength of the children of Israel, closing with a beautiful, magnificent promise of restoration, that in that day the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, a fountain coming forth from the house of the Lord, watering the valley of Shittim, describing Judah dwelling forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation, and He will cleanse their blood that He has not cleansed, for the Lord dwells in Zion, this beautiful closing vision offering genuine, lasting hope for God’s people following this book’s earlier, sobering warnings.
This chapter’s dramatic image, the valley of decision where multitudes gather for final judgment, offers a vivid picture emphasizing that ultimate accountability before God remains genuinely inescapable for every nation regardless of how they treated His people. This book’s beautiful closing promise, mountains dripping new wine and a fountain flowing from the Lord’s house, offers a stunning vision of abundant restoration providing genuine hope following such extensive warnings throughout this relatively brief but powerful prophetic book.
