Joel urges the trumpet to be blown in Zion, an alarm sounded in His holy mountain, letting all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord comes, for it is near, a day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, describing a great people and a strong, there having not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after them, even to the years of many “generations,” “dor” in Hebrew.
Joel urges his readers, “Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil,” urging the trumpet be blown in Zion, sanctifying a fast, calling a solemn assembly, gathering the people, sanctifying the congregation, urging the priests to weep between the porch and the altar.
Joel delivers God’s magnificent, hopeful response, promising to send corn, wine, and oil, and they shall be satisfied, and He will no more make them a reproach among the heathen, restoring the years the locust has eaten, and they shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord their God, promising, “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions,” language the apostle Peter directly quotes on the day of Pentecost, closing with a promise that whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered.
Joel’s memorable instruction, rend your heart and not your garments, insists that genuine repentance requires authentic inward transformation rather than merely outward, ceremonial display of grief without corresponding genuine change. This chapter’s remarkable promise of the Spirit poured out on all flesh, directly quoted by Peter at Pentecost, reveals that this ancient prophecy found its dramatic, historic fulfillment centuries later at the very birth of the New Testament church.
