Job answers the Lord, acknowledging that He can do everything, and that no thought can be withheld from Him, asking who is this that hides counsel without knowledge, admitting he has uttered what he understood not, things too wonderful for him which he did not know. Job declares, “I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and “repent,” “nacham” in Hebrew, “in dust and ashes.”
The Lord tells Eliphaz that His wrath is kindled against him and his two friends, since they have not spoken of Him the thing that is right, as Job has, instructing them to take seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to Job, offering a burnt offering for themselves, with Job praying for them, since the Lord will accept his prayer, lest He deal with them after their folly, since they have not spoken of Him the thing that is right, like His servant Job. Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar do as the Lord commands them, and the Lord accepts Job’s prayer on their behalf.
The Lord turns the captivity of Job when he prays for his friends, giving him twice as much as he had before, all his brothers, sisters, and former acquaintances coming to eat bread with him in his house, bemoaning him and comforting him over all the evil the Lord had brought upon him, each giving him a piece of money and a ring of gold. The Lord blesses Job’s latter end more than his beginning, giving him fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand donkeys, along with seven sons and three daughters, the most beautiful women in the land, living a hundred forty more years, seeing his children and grandchildren to the fourth generation, and dying old and full of days, a remarkable, satisfying conclusion to this profound, extended wrestling with suffering, faith, and the mystery of God’s ways.
Job’s genuine repentance, not for some hidden sin causing his suffering, but for presuming to fully understand God’s ways, marks the true turning point toward his restoration, humble submission before mystery rather than demanded explanation. This closing chapter’s remarkable blessing, doubled beyond his original wealth, does not erase the genuine suffering endured throughout the book, but demonstrates that God’s justice and mercy ultimately prevail, even when their timing and reasoning remain far beyond complete human understanding.
