The Lord answers Job further, asking whether he who contends with the Almighty should instruct Him, and whether he who reproves God should answer it. Job responds with striking brevity and humility, “Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.”
The Lord answers Job again out of the whirlwind, urging him to gird up his loins like a man, since He will demand of him, and he shall declare unto Him, asking whether Job would disannul His judgment, and condemn Him that he may be righteous, asking whether he has an arm like God, or can thunder with a voice like Him, urging him to deck himself now with “majesty,” “gaon” in Hebrew, and excellency, and array himself with glory and beauty, casting abroad the rage of his wrath, beholding everyone proud and abasing him, treading down the wicked in their place.
God then describes behemoth, a massive creature whom He made along with Job, who eats grass like an ox, whose strength is in his loins and force in the navel of his belly, moving his tail like a cedar, his bones like strong pieces of brass, being the chief of the ways of God, only He who made him can approach him with His sword, the mountains bringing him forth food, lying under shady trees in the covert of reeds and fens, willows of the brook surrounding him, trusting he can draw up the Jordan into his mouth, taken with his eyes, or his nose pierced with a snare, another awe-inspiring example of a creature entirely beyond human capacity to tame or fully comprehend.
Job’s humble response, laying his hand upon his mouth rather than continuing to argue, shows genuine transformation taking place through his direct encounter with God, moving from demanding explanation toward simple, honest silence before overwhelming majesty. God’s continued description of behemoth reinforces the same lesson repeatedly, that vast portions of creation itself remain entirely beyond human power to control, tame, or fully explain, let alone the mysteries of divine justice.
