JOB 38 ‐ “The Lord Answers Job”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Whirlwind” it comes from the Hebrew Word “searah” which means “whirlwind, storm.”

After thirty-seven chapters of human debate, God Himself finally speaks. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Job 38.

Then the Lord answers Job out of the “whirlwind,” “searah” in Hebrew, asking who this is that darkens counsel by words without knowledge, urging Job to gird up his loins like a man, since He will demand of him, and he shall answer, asking where he was when God laid the foundations of the earth, urging him to declare it if he has understanding.

God asks Job who determined the earth’s measurements, who stretched the line upon it, whereupon its foundations were fastened, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy, asking who shut up the sea with doors when it broke forth as if it had issued from the womb, when God made the cloud its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, breaking up for it His decreed place, and set bars and doors, saying, “Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed.”

God continues an overwhelming, extended series of questions covering the dawn, the depths of the sea, the gates of death, the breadth of the earth, the dwelling of light and darkness, snow, hail, rain, ice, the constellations, the ordinances of heaven, clouds, lightning, the wisdom in man’s heart, and the provision of food for lions and ravens, a relentless, humbling barrage demonstrating the vast, unbridgeable gap between Job’s limited human understanding and God’s infinite, creative power over every aspect of the universe He has made.

God’s response to Job, not an explanation for his suffering but an overwhelming display of creation’s vast, intricate wonder, reframes the entire conversation away from Job’s specific complaint toward genuine, humbled awe at the Creator’s incomprehensible power and wisdom. This chapter suggests that some questions find their answer not in explanation, but in an encounter with the sheer magnitude of the One being questioned.
