Elihu declares that at this also his heart trembles and is moved out of its place, urging everyone to hear attentively the noise of His voice, and the sound that goes out of His mouth, directing it under the whole heaven, and His lightning unto the ends of the earth, after it a voice roaring, He “thundering,” “ra’am” in Hebrew, with the voice of His excellency, not staying them when His voice is heard, thundering marvellously with His voice, doing great things which we cannot comprehend. Elihu describes how God says to the snow, be on the earth, likewise to the small rain and the great rain of His strength, sealing up the hand of every man, that all men may know His work, the beasts going into dens and remaining in their places, out of the south coming the whirlwind, and cold out of the north, by the breath of God frost being given, and the breadth of the waters being straitened, the thick cloud wearying itself with watering, scattering His bright cloud, turned about by His counsels, that they may do whatever He commands them upon the face of the world in the earth. Elihu asks Job whether he knows how God disposes them, and causes the light of His cloud to shine, whether he knows the balancing of the clouds, the wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge, describing garments warm when He quiets the earth by the south wind, asking whether Job can spread out the sky, strong as a molten looking glass, urging him to teach them what they should say to Him, since they cannot order their speech by reason of darkness, concluding with awe that fair weather comes out of the north with God, and with the Almighty is terrible majesty, touching the Almighty that they cannot find Him out, excellent in power and in judgment, and in plenty of justice, He will not afflict, urging that men therefore fear Him, since He respects not any who are wise of heart, a fitting, awestruck conclusion that immediately precedes God’s own dramatic entrance from within the whirlwind.
Elihu’s closing meditation on the storm’s overwhelming power and mystery, culminating in genuine, humbled awe rather than confident explanation, models exactly the posture the entire book has been building toward. This final human speech, ending in reverent wonder rather than certainty, perfectly sets the stage for God’s own voice to finally speak directly from within the very whirlwind Elihu has just so vividly described.
