Job laments that now those younger than he mock him, whose fathers he would have disdained to set with the dogs of his flock, men whose strength and vigor had already perished, gaunt from want and famine, fleeing into the wilderness, desolate and waste, who are now driven out from among men, crying after them as after a thief, dwelling in the cliffs of valleys, caves of the earth, and rocks. Job describes these very people now mocking him in song, becoming his byword, abhorring him and fleeing far from him, not sparing to spit in his face, since God has loosed his cord and afflicted him, casting off restraint before him, upon his right hand rising the youth, pushing away his feet, raising up against him the ways of their “destruction,” “shod” in Hebrew, marring his path and setting forward his calamity, coming upon him as a wide breaking in of waters, rolling themselves upon him in the desolation. Job describes his own personal anguish, his soul poured out upon him, days of affliction taking hold of him, his bones pierced in the night season, his sinews taking no rest, by God’s great force his garment being changed, binding him about as the collar of his coat, casting him into the mire, becoming like dust and ashes, crying to God but receiving no answer, standing up but God only regarding him, becoming cruel to him, opposing himself against him with His strong hand, lifting him up to the wind, causing him to ride upon it, and dissolving his substance. Job closes acknowledging he knew God would bring him to death, yet wept for those in trouble, and his soul was grieved for the poor, though when he looked for good, evil came, and when he waited for light, darkness came instead, his bowels boiling and not resting, days of affliction confronting him, going mourning without the sun, standing up and crying in the congregation, becoming a brother to dragons and a companion to owls.
The stark contrast between Job’s remembered honor in chapter twenty-nine and his present humiliation here, mocked even by society’s outcasts, illustrates just how completely his circumstances have reversed. His honest admission of crying to God without receiving an answer captures a genuinely painful dimension of suffering, feeling abandoned precisely when reaching out most desperately for connection and relief.
