After this long silence, Job opens his mouth and curses his day, wishing the day of his birth had perished, and the night that announced a man child had been conceived. He wishes that day had remained darkness, that God from above would not regard it, and that no light would shine upon it, wishing clouds would dwell upon it and blackness of the day terrify it, wishing it were not joined to the days of the year.
Job asks why he did not die from the womb, why the knees received him or the breasts that he should nurse, since then he would have lain still and been quiet, slept and been at “rest,” “nuach” in Hebrew, with kings and counselors of the earth who built desolate places for themselves, or with princes who had gold, or as a hidden untimely birth that never sees light. There the wicked cease from troubling, and the weary are at rest, prisoners rest together without hearing the oppressor’s voice, and the small and great are equal there, the servant free from his master.
Job asks why light is given to one in misery, and life to the bitter in soul, who long for death that does not come, digging for it more than for hidden treasures, rejoicing exceedingly when they find the grave. He asks why light is given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in, since his sighing comes before he eats, and his roarings pour out like water, for the thing he greatly feared has come upon him, and what he was afraid of has happened to him, closing this raw, anguished chapter with the stark admission that he has no rest, but trouble comes continually.
Job’s raw, unfiltered anguish, wishing he had never been born rather than face this suffering, demonstrates that genuine faith does not require suppressing honest, painful emotion behind a facade of forced positivity. This chapter gives permission for genuine lament within faith, showing that wrestling honestly with unbearable grief before God remains compatible with the deep, ultimately unshaken trust Job displayed just one chapter earlier.
