Job responds, asking how long they will vex his soul and break him in pieces with words, having reproached him ten times now, not ashamed to make themselves strange to him, acknowledging that even if he has erred, his error remains with himself, yet insisting they should know that God has overthrown him and compassed him with His net.
Job describes feeling utterly abandoned, his brothers put far from him, his acquaintances estranged, his kinsfolk failing, his familiar friends forgetting him, his household servants counting him a stranger, calling his own “servant,” “ebed” in Hebrew, and receiving no answer, his breath being strange to his wife, though he entreated for the children’s sake of his own body, even young children despising him, all his inward friends abhorring him, and those he loved turning against him, his bone cleaving to his skin and flesh, escaping only with the skin of his teeth.
Job pleads with his friends to have pity on him, since the hand of God has touched him, asking why they persecute him as God does, and are not satisfied with his flesh, wishing his words were now written and printed in a book, or graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock forever. Then comes his stunning declaration, “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me,” one of the most remarkable expressions of resurrection hope found anywhere in the entire Old Testament.
Job’s declaration, I know that my redeemer lives, bursts through his deepest despair with a hope so vivid and specific that it anticipates truths not fully revealed until centuries later, a living Redeemer who will stand upon the earth and grant him to see God face to face. This remarkable statement, emerging from the very depths of suffering rather than comfortable circumstances, shows that genuine hope in God can surface even amid humanity’s most painful, isolating trials.
