Job laments that his breath is corrupt, his days extinct, and the grave ready for him, surrounded only by mockers, his eye continuing in their provocation, asking God to lay down a pledge for him with Himself, since who else would strike hands with him, having hidden his friends’ hearts from understanding, so they should not be exalted.
Job observes that he who speaks flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail, since he has become a “byword,” “mashal” in Hebrew, of the people, and he was formerly as one to be spit upon, his eye also growing dim because of sorrow, and all his members being as a shadow, upright men being astonished at this, and the innocent stirring up against the hypocrite, though the righteous shall hold on his way, and one with clean hands shall grow stronger and stronger.
Job invites his friends to return and try again, though he cannot find one wise man among them, his days passed, his purposes broken off, the very thoughts of his heart, turning night into day and light being short because of darkness, his only hope now being the grave, calling corruption his father and the worm his mother and sister, asking where then his hope is, and who shall see it, since it shall go down to the bars of the pit when their rest together is in the dust, a bleak, honest low point in Job’s extended struggle before the dialogue continues into its final rounds.
Job’s admission that he has become a byword among the people captures the added social isolation that so often accompanies genuine suffering, being misunderstood publicly compounds private pain in ways that make honest lament even more difficult to voice. His bleak conclusion that only the grave remains his hope shows faith continuing to wrestle honestly with despair, rather than offering easy, premature resolution to genuinely unresolved anguish.
