Eliphaz responds again, asking whether a wise man should utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind, reasoning with unprofitable talk or speech that does no good, accusing Job of casting off fear and restraining prayer before God, since his own mouth utters his iniquity, and he chooses the tongue of the crafty, his own lips testifying against him.
Eliphaz asks pointedly whether Job is the first man born, or was formed before the hills, whether he has heard the secret “counsel,” “sod” in Hebrew, of God, and whether wisdom belongs to him alone, questioning what Job knows that they do not, what he understands that is not in them, since gray-headed and very aged men are among them, much older than Job’s own father, asking whether the consolations of God are too small for him, or whether there is any secret thing with him.
Eliphaz describes at length the terrible fate of the wicked man, who travails with pain all his days, a dreadful sound in his ears, believing he will not return out of darkness, wandering for bread, knowing that a day of darkness is ready at his hand, trouble and anguish making him afraid, prevailing against him as a king ready for battle, since he stretched out his hand against God and strengthened himself against the Almighty, running upon Him even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers. Eliphaz continues describing this wicked man’s hollow, ultimately empty prosperity, his riches not continuing, his branch not being green, an argument aimed increasingly directly at Job himself, implying ever more strongly that Job’s own suffering confirms exactly this wicked pattern.
Eliphaz’s escalating accusations, now directly implying Job belongs among the wicked he describes, show how theological certainty, unchecked by genuine humility, can curdle into cruelty toward someone already suffering deeply. This second round of speeches reveals that well-worn religious explanations, repeated with increasing force rather than reconsidered, often become more rigid and less compassionate rather than more helpful over time.
