Job declares his eye has seen all this, his ear has heard and understood it, and what his friends know, he knows also, not inferior to them, yet he desires to speak to the Almighty and reason with God, since his friends are forgers of lies and physicians of no value, wishing they would altogether hold their peace, since that would be their wisdom.
Job asks whether they will speak wickedly for God, and talk deceitfully for Him, accepting His person and contending for God, questioning whether it would be good when He searches them out, or whether they could deceive Him as one deceives a man, warning they will surely be reproved if they secretly accept persons. Job declares he will hold his own “ways,” “derek” in Hebrew, in his mouth, and though God slay him, yet he will trust in Him, but he will maintain his own ways before Him, insisting that this itself shall be his salvation, since a hypocrite could not come before Him.
Job asks God to withdraw His hand far from him, and let not His fear terrify him, and then he would call, and let God answer, or let him speak, and God answer him, asking how many iniquities and sins he has, that God should make him know his transgression, questioning why God hides His face and counts him as an enemy, asking whether He will break a leaf driven to and fro, and pursue dry stubble, since God writes bitter things against him and makes him possess the iniquities of his youth, putting his feet in stocks, marking all his paths, printing himself upon the heels of his feet, closing with the observation that man, like a rotten thing, consumes like a garment eaten by moths.
Job’s declaration, though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him, stands as one of Scripture’s most remarkable statements of persistent faith, showing genuine trust that continues even without understanding or resolution to present suffering. His refusal to offer his friends’ dishonest, flattering theology, even to defend God, reveals real integrity, choosing honest wrestling over comfortable but ultimately false explanations.
