Zophar the Naamathite responds, asking whether the multitude of Job’s words should not be answered, and whether a man full of talk should be justified, questioning whether his lies should make men hold their peace, and when he mocks, whether no one should make him ashamed, wishing that God Himself would speak and open His lips against Job, showing him the secrets of “wisdom,” “chokmah” in Hebrew, that true wisdom is double what Job understands, so he should know that God exacts of him less than his iniquity deserves.
Zophar asks whether Job can find out the deep things of God, or find out the Almighty to perfection, describing this knowledge as high as heaven, deeper than hell, longer than the earth, and broader than the sea, wondering how anyone could hinder God if He cuts off, shuts up, or gathers together, since He knows vain men, seeing wickedness, and will He not then consider it, since vain man would be wise, though man is born like a wild donkey’s colt.
Zophar urges Job that if he would prepare his heart and stretch out his hands toward God, putting away iniquity from his hand and not letting wickedness dwell in his tabernacles, then he could lift up his face without spot, be steadfast and not fear, forgetting his misery, remembering it only as waters that pass away, his life brighter than noonday, and though it be dark, it would be as the morning, and he would be secure because there is hope, digging about him and taking his rest in safety, but warns that the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost, the harshest and most direct accusation yet leveled against Job by any of his three friends.
Zophar’s blunt assertion that God actually exacts less punishment from Job than his sin deserves represents the harshest, most presumptuous accusation offered by any of the three friends throughout this entire extended dialogue. His confident claim to understand divine wisdom, ironically, will later be directly contradicted when God Himself finally speaks, revealing just how much genuine mystery remains beyond what any human, however sincere, can fully grasp or explain.
