The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Adulterers” it comes from the Hebrew Word “na’aph” which means “adulterers.”
Jeremiah expresses overwhelming grief while urging genuine boasting only in knowing the Lord. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Jeremiah 9.
Jeremiah cries, “Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!” wishing for a lodging place in the wilderness, that he might leave his people, and go from them, since they are all “adulterers,” “na’aph” in Hebrew, an assembly of treacherous men.
Jeremiah describes how they bend their tongues like their bow for lies, and are not valiant for the truth upon the earth, since they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not Him, urging everyone to take heed of his neighbor, and not trust in any brother, for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will walk with slanders, describing how they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity, their habitation being in the midst of deceit.
Jeremiah declares God’s memorable instruction, “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD,” describing coming judgment, the Lord commanding to call for the mourning women, that they may come, and take up a wailing for them, closing with a description of death coming up into their windows, entering into their palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.
Jeremiah’s overwhelming wish for a head of water and eyes as a fountain of tears gives genuine, unrestrained voice to prophetic grief, refusing to minimize the real, devastating human cost behind necessary judgment. God’s memorable instruction, let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, redirects genuine value away from human wisdom, might, and wealth toward the far more foundational treasure of authentic relationship with God Himself.
