Jeremiah delivers the word that the Lord spoke against Babylon, against the land of the Chaldeans, urging them to declare it among the nations, publishing it, and not concealing it, saying, “Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces,” describing how out of the north there comes up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell there.
Jeremiah describes the children of Israel and the children of Judah coming together, going and weeping, seeking the Lord their God, asking the way to Zion with their faces toward it, saying, come, and let us join ourselves to the Lord in a perpetual “covenant,” “beriyth” in Hebrew, that shall not be forgotten, describing Israel as a scattered sheep, the lions having driven him away, first the king of Assyria having devoured him, and last this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon having broken his bones.
Jeremiah delivers extensive judgment against Babylon, urging her destroyers to come against her from every side, since she has sinned against the Lord, describing how a sword is upon the Chaldeans, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men, a drought is upon her waters, and they shall be dried up, for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols, therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, closing with a striking summary, since as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbor cities, no man shall abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell in it, and this proud empire, which was once God’s own instrument of judgment against Judah, would itself ultimately face complete, total destruction.
This extensive oracle against Babylon, the very empire God had used as His instrument to judge Judah, demonstrates that being genuinely used for God’s purposes never exempts anyone or any nation from accountability for their own separate motives and cruelty. Its beautiful vision of Israel and Judah reunited, weeping together and seeking a perpetual covenant, offers genuine hope for reconciliation extending even between formerly divided kingdoms.
