Jeremiah records God’s challenge, to run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in its broad places, if they can find a man, if there is any who executes judgment, who seeks the “truth,” “emet” in Hebrew, and He will pardon it, describing how though they say, the Lord lives, surely they swear falsely.
Jeremiah describes examining the poor, thinking they are foolish, since they know not the way of the Lord, nor the judgment of their God, but going to the great men, and speaking to them, since they have known the way of the Lord, and the judgment of their God, yet these too have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds, describing how a lion out of the forest shall slay them, a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities, since their transgressions are many, and their backslidings have increased.
Jeremiah describes God’s people as revolting and rebelling, having a revolting and a rebellious heart, having eyes, and see not, having ears, and hear not, not fearing Him, who places the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it, describing how a wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land, the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means, and His people love to have it so, closing with the sobering question, “and what will ye do in the end thereof?” this chapter’s extensive search for even a single righteous person underscoring the genuine depth of Judah’s widespread moral and spiritual corruption.
God’s extensive search through Jerusalem’s streets for even a single genuinely righteous person exposes the genuine breadth of corruption reaching from the poor through the powerful, class distinctions providing no automatic protection against widespread unfaithfulness.
