Jeremiah delivers the word of the Lord that came to him against the Philistines, before Pharaoh smote Gaza, describing how waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is in it, the city, and those who dwell in it, then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall “howl,” “yalal” in Hebrew, at the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses, at the rushing of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels.
Jeremiah describes how the fathers shall not look back to their children for feebleness of hands, because of the day that comes to spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper who remains, for the Lord will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor, describing baldness coming upon Gaza, Ashkelon being cut off with the remnant of their valley, asking how long they will cut themselves.
Jeremiah closes describing the sword of the Lord, asking how long it will be before it is quiet, urging it to put itself up into its scabbard, rest, and be still, but asking how it can be quiet, seeing the Lord has given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the seashore, there He has appointed it, this brief but forceful oracle against Judah’s longtime Philistine adversaries demonstrating that God’s judgment extended genuinely across the entire region rather than being narrowly confined to Judah’s own borders alone.
This brief oracle’s vivid image, an overflowing flood sweeping through the land, illustrates the sudden, overwhelming nature of the coming Babylonian invasion that would devastate Philistia alongside Judah and its other neighboring nations. Its poignant question, how long before the Lord’s sword is quiet, acknowledges the genuine weight and cost even necessary judgment carries, without pretending such devastating consequence comes easily or without real cost.
