Jeremiah records the word that came to him concerning all the Jews who dwell in the land of Egypt, urging them to remember the evil he has brought upon Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah, which are desolate this day, and no man dwells in them, because of their “wickedness,” “ra’ah” in Hebrew, which they have committed to provoke Him to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, their fathers, nor their kings. Jeremiah reminds them how He sent all His servants the prophets to them, rising early and sending them, saying, do not this abominable thing that He hates, but they did not hearken, nor incline their ear, to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods, therefore His fury and His anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, and they are wasted and desolate, as it is this day, urging them, why do they commit this great evil against their own souls, to cut off from them man and woman, child and suckling, out of the midst of Judah, to leave them none to remain. Jeremiah describes the people’s startling, defiant response, that as for the word he has spoken to them in the name of the Lord, they will not hearken to him, but will certainly do whatever thing goes forth out of their own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as they have done, they, their fathers, their kings, and their princes, since then they had plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil, but since they left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, they have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine, closing with Jeremiah’s response, that this very persistence in idolatry is exactly what brought judgment upon them, and God gives them a sign, that Pharaohhophra king of Egypt shall be given into the hand of his enemies, just as He gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.
The people’s remarkably defiant response, openly declaring they will continue worshiping the queen of heaven regardless of Jeremiah’s warning, reveals just how deeply entrenched idolatrous practice had become, resistant even to witnessing its own devastating, undeniable consequences. Their twisted logic, blaming abandoned idolatry rather than the idolatry itself for their suffering, illustrates how thoroughly self-deception can distort even the clearest, most obvious historical evidence.
