Jeremiah records how all the captains of the forces, Johanan the son of Kareah, Jezaniah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, come near, and say to Jeremiah the prophet, let their supplication be accepted before him, and let him pray for them to the Lord their God, for all this remnant, that the Lord his God may show them the “way,” “derek” in Hebrew, in which they should walk, and the thing they should do. Jeremiah agrees to pray for them, promising whatever thing the Lord answers them, he will declare it to them, and will keep nothing back from them, the people responding that the Lord be a true and faithful witness between them, if they do not do according to everything the Lord shall send him to tell them, whether it be good or evil, they will obey the voice of the Lord their God, to whom they send him, that it may be well with them, when they obey the voice of the Lord their God. Jeremiah, after ten days, receives the word of the Lord, calling Johanan and all the people, and telling them that if they will still abide in this land, He will build them, and not pull them down, and He will plant them, and not pluck them up, for He repents Him of the evil He has done to them, urging them not to fear the king of Babylon, of whom they are afraid, for He is with them to save them, and to deliver them from his hand, but warning that if they set their faces to enter into Egypt, thinking there they shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread, then the sword they fear shall overtake them there in the land of Egypt, and the famine shall follow close after them there, closing with a stark warning that they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that He will bring upon them.
The people’s premature promise of obedience, sworn before even hearing God’s actual answer, reveals an important gap between professed commitment and genuine, tested follow-through, a gap the following chapter will unfortunately expose in painful detail. Jeremiah’s honest ten-day wait before delivering God’s answer models genuine patience in seeking authentic divine guidance rather than rushing toward a convenient, predetermined conclusion.
