Jeremiah records how in the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came with all his army against Jerusalem, and besieged it, and in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the city was broken up, all the princes of the king of Babylon coming in, and sitting in the middle “gate,” “sha’ar” in Hebrew, describing how when Zedekiah king of Judah and all the men of war saw them, they fled by night, out of the city, by the way of the king’s garden. Jeremiah describes how the army of the Chaldeans pursued them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, taking him, and bringing him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who gave judgment upon him, slaying his sons before his eyes at Riblah, also slaying all the nobles of Judah, putting out Zedekiah’s eyes, and binding him with chains, to carry him to Babylon, the Chaldeans also burning the king’s house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and breaking down the walls of Jerusalem, Nebuzaradan carrying away captive the rest of the people who remained in the city, but leaving the poor of the people, who had nothing, in the land of Judah, giving them vineyards and fields at the same time. Jeremiah records how Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah by Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying, take him, and look well to him, and do him no harm, but do to him even as he shall say to them, so they take Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and commit him to Gedaliah, that he should carry him home, so he dwells among the people, closing with God’s word to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, promising that He will deliver him in that day, and he shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom he is afraid, since He will surely deliver him, and he shall not fall by the sword, but his life shall be to him for a prey, because he has put his trust in the Lord, this chapter fulfilling Jeremiah’s persistent, longstanding warnings with sobering, complete historical accuracy.
This chapter’s grim, detailed fulfillment of Jeremiah’s persistent warnings, delivered faithfully across decades despite constant rejection and opposition, vindicates genuine prophecy through actual, historical accuracy rather than mere impressive rhetoric alone. God’s specific, tender promise of deliverance for Ebedmelech, the compassionate Ethiopian who rescued Jeremiah, demonstrates that genuine faithfulness receives real, personal recognition even amid such widespread, devastating national judgment.
