A king dramatically destroys God’s written word, only for it to be rewritten and expanded. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Jeremiah 36.
Jeremiah records the word that came to him in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, instructing him to take a “roll,” “megillah” in Hebrew, of a book, and write in it all the words He has spoken to him against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the days of Josiah, even to this day, so Jeremiah calls Baruch, who writes from his mouth all the words of the Lord, which He had spoken to him. Jeremiah, being shut up and unable to go into the house of the Lord himself, instructs Baruch to go and read from the roll in the ears of the people in the Lord’s house, hoping they will present their supplication before Him, and return every one from his evil way, so Baruch reads the words of the Lord in the house of the Lord, and when the princes hear all the words, they are afraid, and tell King Jehoiakim, who sends for the roll to be read before him, and as Jehudi reads three or four leaves, the king cuts it with the penknife, and casts it into the fire in the hearth, until all the roll is consumed, neither the king nor his servants who heard all these words being afraid, nor tearing their garments. Jeremiah records God’s response, instructing him to take another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah has burned, and concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, that he shall say, he shall have none to sit upon the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost, so Jeremiah takes another roll, and gives it to Baruch, who writes in it, from the mouth of Jeremiah, all the words of the book which Jehoiakim had burned in the fire, and there were added besides to them many like words, this remarkable account demonstrating that no human power, however defiant, can genuinely destroy God’s own enduring, persistent word.
Jehoiakim’s dramatic, defiant burning of God’s written word, unafraid rather than repentant, demonstrates how hardened rebellion can respond to genuine truth with outright destruction rather than any consideration or reflection. The word’s swift restoration, rewritten and even expanded, shows that human attempts to destroy or silence God’s genuine truth ultimately prove futile against His persistent, determined purposes.
