Jeremiah pronounces woe to the pastors who destroy and scatter the sheep of His pasture, describing how He will visit upon them the evil of their doings, but He will gather the remnant of His flock out of all countries where He has driven them, and will bring them again to their folds, and they shall be fruitful and increase, setting up “shepherds,” “roeh” in Hebrew, over them, who shall feed them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking.
Jeremiah delivers a beautiful messianic promise, “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS,” describing a coming day when they shall no longer say, the Lord lives who brought Israel from Egypt, but the Lord lives who brought them from the north country, and from all countries.
Jeremiah condemns the false prophets extensively, describing how they prophesy lies in His name, He did not send them, they run, though not sent, they prophesy, though He has not spoken to them, they steal His words from one another, describing how the word of the Lord is like a fire, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces, asking whether He is a God at hand only, and not a God afar off, whether any can hide himself in secret places that He cannot see him, closing with a warning against the burden of the Lord, since they have perverted the words of the living God, and He will bring an everlasting reproach upon them, and a perpetual shame that shall not be forgotten.
Jeremiah’s beautiful messianic prophecy, a righteous Branch called The Lord Our Righteousness, offers genuine hope for a coming King fundamentally unlike the corrupt shepherds this chapter so sharply condemns. His memorable comparison, God’s word being like fire and like a hammer that breaks rock in pieces, reveals Scripture’s genuine, powerful capacity to both purify and demolish whatever falsehood stands opposed to it.
