Jeremiah records God’s sobering response, “Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth,” describing how if they ask where they shall go forth, he shall tell them, such as are for “death,” “maveth” in Hebrew, to death, and such as are for the sword, to the sword, and such as are for the famine, to the famine, and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.
Jeremiah describes God appointing four kinds of destroyers over them, the sword to slay, the dogs to tear, the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy, describing how He will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem, God asking who shall have pity upon Jerusalem, or who shall bemoan her, or who shall go aside to ask how she does.
Jeremiah expresses his own genuine anguish, “Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me,” yet also declaring, “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts,” describing how he did not sit in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoice, but sat alone because of God’s hand, since He filled him with indignation, asking why his pain is perpetual, and his wound incurable, yet closing with God’s promise to make him a fenced brasen wall against this people, and though they fight against him, they shall not prevail, for He is with him to save him, and to deliver him.
God’s sobering declaration, though Moses and Samuel stood before Me, My heart would not turn toward this people, reveals judgment’s genuine severity, naming Israel’s two greatest historic intercessors as insufficient to reverse a course already too far advanced. Jeremiah’s honest confession of personal isolation and pain, sitting alone because God’s hand was upon him, alongside his genuine delight in God’s words as his heart’s joy, shows how costly and rewarding faithful calling can simultaneously be.
