Jeremiah asks God, “Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?” observing that God has planted them, yes, they have taken “root,” “shoresh” in Hebrew, they grow, yes, they bring forth fruit, He being near in their mouth, and far from their reins. Jeremiah pleads for God to pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter, asking how long the land shall mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of those who dwell in it, the beasts being consumed, and the birds, because they said, He shall not see our latter end, God responding that if Jeremiah has run with the footmen, and they have wearied him, then how can he contend with horses, and if in the land of peace he trusted, in which he was secure, then how will he do in the swelling of Jordan. Jeremiah records God’s further response, that even his brethren, and the house of his father, even they have dealt treacherously with him, calling a multitude after him, urging him not to believe them, though they speak fair words to him, describing how God has forsaken His house, He has left His heritage, He has given the dearly beloved of His soul into the hand of her enemies, His heritage being to Him as a lion in the forest, crying out against Him, closing with a striking promise, that after God has plucked Judah out, He will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land, and if the neighboring nations will diligently learn the ways of His people, to swear by His name, then shall they be built in the midst of His people.
Jeremiah’s honest question, why does the way of the wicked prosper, why are all who deal treacherously happy, echoes similar honest wrestling found throughout the Psalms and Job, giving genuine voice to a difficult, universal question about justice’s apparent delay. God’s sobering response, comparing present difficulty to merely running with footmen before greater challenges arrive, suggests present struggles may actually be preparation for even harder circumstances still ahead.
