Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah, of the priests in Anathoth, records the word of the Lord that came to him in the days of Josiah, describing how the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a “prophet,” “navi” in Hebrew, unto the nations.”
Jeremiah responds, “Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child,” but the Lord tells him not to say he is a child, since he shall go to all that He sends him, and whatever He commands him he shall speak, urging him not to be afraid of their faces, for He is with him to deliver him, the Lord putting forth His hand and touching his mouth, saying, “Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.”
Jeremiah describes two visions given to him, a rod of an almond tree, confirming the Lord watches over His word to perform it, and a seething pot, its face toward the north, from where evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land, the Lord explaining that families of the kingdoms of the north shall come, and set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls, urging Jeremiah to gird up his loins, and arise, and speak to them all that He commands him, not to be dismayed at their faces, lest He confound him before them, promising to make him a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land.
God’s declaration, before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart, reveals that Jeremiah’s calling existed even before his own conscious awareness, establishing genuine purpose rooted in God’s prior knowledge rather than mere human achievement or self-selection. His promise to make Jeremiah a fortified city and iron pillar against fierce opposition offers real assurance that God equips whomever He genuinely calls, however inadequate they may initially feel.
