James warns his brethren against holding the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ with respect of persons, describing a scenario where a man with a gold ring and fine clothing is shown preference over a poor man in vile clothing, asking whether they have not become judges of evil thoughts, reminding them that God has chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom.
James explains that if they fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself,” they do well, but if they have respect to persons, they commit sin, being convinced of the law as transgressors, since whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, is guilty of all, describing “mercy,” “eleos” in Greek, as rejoicing against judgment.
James asks what profit it is if a man says he has faith, and has not works, since faith without works is dead, being alone, declaring that even the devils believe, and tremble, asking whether they will know that faith without works is dead, illustrating this with Abraham, justified by works when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar, and Rahab the harlot, justified by works when she received the messengers, and sent them out another way, closing with the memorable conclusion, “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”
James’s blunt warning against showing favoritism based on outward wealth or appearance exposes how easily genuine faith can be compromised by worldly values sneaking into supposedly spiritual communities. His central argument, that faith without works is dead, insists genuine belief must produce visible, practical action, not as a means of earning salvation, but as inevitable evidence that authentic faith actually exists.
