James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, writes to the twelve tribes scattered abroad, urging them to count it all joy when they fall into various “trials,” “peirasmos” in Greek, knowing that the trying of their faith works patience, letting patience have her perfect work, that they may be perfect and entire, lacking nothing.
James instructs that if any lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally, and does not upbraid, and it shall be given him, but let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, since he who wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed, describing how the brother of low degree should rejoice in that he is exalted, and the rich in that he is made low, since as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
James declares blessed is the man who endures temptation, since when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, warning that God cannot be tempted with evil, neither does He tempt any man, but every man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed, urging his readers to be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, and to be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving their own selves, comparing one who hears and does not do to a man beholding his natural face in a mirror, who goes away and immediately forgets what manner of man he was, closing with the observation that pure religion and undefiled before God is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
James’s startling opening instruction, count it all joy when facing various trials, reframes genuine hardship as an opportunity for growth in patience rather than something to be merely endured or avoided at all costs. His memorable image, a hearer who forgets his reflection like someone glancing in a mirror, warns that genuine faith always requires practical action, not merely intellectual agreement or passive listening alone.
