Isaiah promises that the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light, those who dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them the light has shined, describing a coming increase of the nation and joy, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil, since the yoke of their burden, and the staff of their shoulder, the rod of their oppressor, God has broken.
Isaiah delivers this celebrated prophecy, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, “Counsellor,” “yoetz” in Hebrew, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever,” this remarkable prophecy pointing directly toward the coming Messiah’s eternal, righteous reign.
Isaiah then turns to describe judgment upon Israel for their continued pride and unrepentance, describing how the Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it has lighted upon Israel, all the people knowing it, even Ephraim and Samaria, who say in pride and stoutness of heart that the bricks are fallen down, but they will build with hewn stones, describing how despite repeated judgment, His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still, this refrain repeating throughout the chapter’s closing section, emphasizing the people’s persistent refusal to genuinely turn back to God despite mounting consequences.
Isaiah’s beloved prophecy, unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, remains one of Scripture’s most treasured messianic promises, celebrated especially at Christmas as pointing directly toward Christ’s coming, eternal, peaceful reign. This chapter’s sobering repeated refrain, His anger is not turned away but His hand is stretched out still, shows that even glorious future hope did not exempt the present generation from genuine accountability for their continued, persistent unrepentance.
