Isaiah records God’s response, that He is sought by those who did not ask for Him, He is found by those who did not seek Him, He said, “Behold me, behold me,” to a nation not called by His name, He has spread out His hands all day to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, after their own “thoughts,” “machashabah” in Hebrew, a people who provoke Him to anger continually to His face.
Isaiah describes how God will not destroy all, since as the new wine is found in the cluster, and one says, destroy it not, for a blessing is in it, so will He do for His servants’ sakes, that He may not destroy them all, bringing forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of His mountains, His elect inheriting it, and His servants dwelling there, describing His people, who seek Him, being blessed, but those who forsake the Lord, who forget His holy mountain, being numbered to the sword.
Isaiah delivers God’s magnificent promise, “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind… I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy… there shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days… The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock… They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD,” this magnificent vision of complete cosmic renewal offering some of Scripture’s most sweeping, comprehensive hope for genuine, final restoration.
Isaiah’s magnificent promise, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, offers Scripture’s earliest, most sweeping vision of complete cosmic renewal, later developed further in Revelation’s own detailed description of the new creation. Its poignant detail, infants no longer dying in days and the elderly filling out their full years, captures genuine longing for a world where death’s premature interruptions are finally, completely overcome.
