Isaiah describes a mighty warrior returning from judgment before recalling God’s ancient mercies. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 63.
Isaiah describes a striking vision, “Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save,” asking why his apparel is red, and his garments like him who treads in the winefat, describing how he has trodden the winepress alone, and of the “people,” “am” in Hebrew, there was none with him, their blood being sprinkled upon his garments.
Isaiah describes how the day of vengeance is in his heart, and the year of his redeemed has come, he looked, and there was none to help, and he wondered that there was none to uphold, therefore his own arm brought salvation to him, describing how he will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has bestowed on them, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which He has bestowed on them according to His mercies, and according to the multitude of His lovingkindnesses.
Isaiah recounts Israel’s history, recalling the days of old, Moses, and his people, asking where is He who brought them up out of the sea, with the shepherd of His flock, who led them by the right hand of Moses, dividing the water before them, describing how in all their affliction He was afflicted, and the angel of His presence saved them, in His love and in His pity He redeemed them, and He bore them, and carried them all the days of old, yet they rebelled, and vexed His Holy Spirit, so He was turned to be their enemy, closing with a plea for God to look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of His holiness and of His glory, asking where His zeal and His strength are, the sounding of His bowels and of His mercies being restrained toward them.
Isaiah’s dramatic vision of the mighty warrior returning from judgment, garments stained from treading the winepress alone, portrays God’s decisive action against evil with vivid, unforgettable imagery. This chapter’s tender recollection, in all their affliction He was afflicted, reveals genuine divine empathy woven throughout Israel’s difficult history, God experiencing their suffering alongside them rather than remaining distantly unaffected.
